Aurangabad : Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Tushar Rathod has defeated to Congress candidate Hanumantrao Patil Betmogrekar in the by-election to Mukhed Assembly seat in Maharashtra's Nanded district. Tushar Rathod, who is son of Govind Rathod, whose death last October.

Congress candidate Hanumantrao Patil Betmogrekar was his his nearest candidate and he has defeated from BJP candidate Tushar Rathod by 47,248 votes, official said.

The election was necessitated following the death of Mukhed sitting BJP MLA and Tushar's father Govind Rathod. The polling was held on February 13 and the counting of votes was held yesterday.

Leading by 37,876 votes at the end of the 17th round of counting, Mr. Rathod consolidated his lead further, securing 1,00,319 votes. The Congress candidate secured 53,071 votes.

BJP president Amit Shah had offered ticket to Tushar Rathod for the by-election. A sympathy wave after Govind’s demise was expected to benefit Mr. Tushar Rathod. Rathod’s victory will increase the BJP’s strength to 122 legislators in the Maharashtra Assembly.
