Kabul (Afghanistan) : Taliban suicide bombers dressed as police officers attacked a police station Tuesday in Afghanistan, killing at least 20 people in the latest assault targeting local security forces, authorities said.

Local officials said a group of suicide bombers attacked a police station in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing at least 22 officers and wounding 18 others.

One attacker blew himself up at the gate of the headquarters in Puli Alam city, about 60 kilometers south of the capital, Kabul, according to provincial government spokesman Din Mohammad Darwesh.

At least one other bomber detonated his explosives inside the compound where officers had gathered to eat. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghan military and police launched a major joint operation in Helmand province on Monday hoping to weaken the insurgents before "fighting season" begins, usually in April or May, the defence ministry said.
