Kidney Dysfunction prevalent in the age group of 50-60 years : Study
New Delhi : On the occasion of World Kidney Day, Global diagnostics chain, SRL Diagnostics has released a 4 years long PAN India analysis from 2012-2015 on key kidney function tests performed at SRL labs. Two key parameters of the analysis included, kidney function test, namely-Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and Serum Creatinine and Cystatin C.
A plethora of systemic disorders like diabetes and cardiovascular problems can lead to progressive deterioration of kidney function and eventually to kidney disease; secondary to these underlying systemic conditions. Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) and Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) as a complication of CKD are growing medical concerns globally and in India. The lack of preventive information has led to the prevalence of kidney dysfunction.
According the report, a total of 89,14,410 tests were performed across SRL labs pan India for determining the levels of BUN, creatinine and Cystatin C. Out of total tests, close to one third of the tests, revealed deranged values of these biochemical parameters of Kidney function. Also, individuals above the age group of 60 seemed are found to be most affected and vulnerable to same.
Therefore, cutting geographic zones, the age group most affected with deranged BUN and Creatinine values was 61-85 years. Also, as per the report, the frequency of abnormal results were higher in the Cystain C group as compared to the BUN creatinine group. The frequency of abnormal test results in the Cystatin C group ranged from 50 to 60 %

Zone Wise Analysis on BUN and Creatinine:
Highest number of abnormality was seen majorly in Eastern states of the country with 31.06% while northern and western had 30.02 % and 25.73% respectively. Among the four zones, southern India showed the lowest percentage of abnormality with 21.84 % percent. In northern and eastern states close to one third of the tests revealed deranged values of these biochemical parameters of kidney function.
Zone wise analysis on Cystatin C:
Highest number of abnormality was seen majorly in Eastern states of the country with 59.36% while western and southern states of the country was seen majorly in 57.99% and 53.22% respectively. Among the four zones,India showed the lowest percentage of abnormality with 21.84 % percent.
