Birthday Special : The Known Facts of 'Balmaaa Girl' Sridevi
She had two step brothers and a sister. Sridevi has said that she never had a normal childhood and that she had no friends. The only people she trusted were her parents and her sibling.
Sridevi made her debut at the age of 4 in the Tamil movie Thunaivan as a young Murga. She made her Bollywood debut in 1975 in the movie Julie. Her first lead role was in the Tamil movie Moondru Mudichu directed by K Balachander. In 1979 she starred in the Hindi movie Solva Saawan.
She was labelled 'Thunder Thighs' after starring, in 1983, in the super hit movie Himmatwala. Her famous song in the movie Naino Mein Sapna, was all the rage. After giving another hit Tohfa the following year, Sridevi established herself as the Bollywood’s number 1 actress.
1983 also saw the Hindi remake of her Tamil movie Moondram Pirai; the Hindi version was called Sadma. Sridevi played a child-woman suffering from amnesia and received enormous critical acclaim for her work. In 1986 she starred in the snake fantasy film Nagina in which Sridevi played a shape-shifting snake. It was an enormous hit, yet again establishing Sridevi’s stronghold in Bollywood.
Mr India, released in 1987, was one of the most iconic films of the year and remains a hallmark in Hindi cinema. Sridevi's turn as a journalist and her memorable song in Kaate Nahin Kat Te was a chartbuster. Clad in a skimpy blue chiffon sari, she truly set pulses racing and cemented her superstar status.
1989's Chalbaaz saw Sridevi in a double role and was another enormous hit. The song Na Jaana Kaha Se Aayi Hai was particularly memorable. Critics said she made Sunny Deol and Rajnikanth look like "sideckicks" because of her formidable comic timing and star power.
Perhaps her most memorable role in commercial cinema was Yash Chopra's Chandni, which was also released in 1989. Beautiful locales, dances and an ethereal Sridevi styled to perfection by Yash Chopra, made this one of the most iconic romantic movies of all time. She created a tidal wave of style with her simple churidhaars and chiffon dupattas.
In 1991 she worked with Yash Chopra again in Lamhe. While it didn't do too well commercially because of its bold subject, it again showcased Sridevi's incredible range as an actress. Playing both a mother and daughter, her versatility and depth was profoundly touching.
Sridevi's last major film that she starred in before she got married was Judaai with Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar. She played a greedy housewife who would go to any lengths for money. It was a brilliant act worthy of an actress whose career has been nothing short of illustrious.
Sridevi got married to Boney Kapoor in 1996. The two of them were friends for a while before they wed. Their marriage, while controversial because Boney Kapoor left his wife Mona and his two children Arjun and Anshula to be with Sridevi, has been a happy one.
Sridevi made a comeback of sorts on the small screen with the Boney Kapoor production Malini Iyer. Other TV appearances also followed. Sridevi and Boney Kapoor have two daughters together – Khushi and Jahnvi.
After working for almost all her life, Sridevi took a hiatus to devote time to her family. The happy foursome are seen here on a family vacation to the Maldives. Sridevi, who was once made fun of for her thunder thighs, is svelte and beautiful now. She has an impeccable sense of style and frequently features on Best Dressed lists and is often a showstopper for several top designers.
