New Delhi : A Criminal who was wanted in several cases has been killed in an encounter with Delhi Police on the Saturday evening at a restaurant in Central Delhi's New Rajender Nagar area, which was packed with weekend diners. At least 50 people, including customers and employees, were in the restaurant.

The incident took place at 8.30pm inside the Sagar Ratna restaurant, when four special cell officers in plain clothes entered in pursuit of 33-year-old Manoj Vashishtha, wanted by the Delhi Police in around a dozen cheating cases.

According to a senior police official, the deceased, identified as Manoj Vashishtha who was wanted in several cases of fraud and other crimes, was hit by a bullet in the gunbattle with a team of Special Cell of Delhi Police.

Vashishtha was a wanted criminal and carried a reward on his head. We had received a tip-off that he would be coming to Sagar Ratna restaurant in New Rajender Nagar, following which a trap was laid.

Manoj was injured in the encounter and rushed to hospital where he was declared dead.

Heavy police presence has been ensured in the area and senior officers are at the spot. A team of special commissioner S N Shrivastava, joint commissioner Vivek Gogia and DCP Sanjeev Yadav had reached the spot at 9.30pm. An FIR and a magisterial enquiry as per the supreme court's order is being initiated.
