Narendra Modi pays tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on death anniversary

New Delhi : The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 24th death anniversary. 

The Prime Minister wrote in a post on micro-blogging site Twitter as he said, "Paying tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary."

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu in May 1991 during an election meeting by a woman suicide bomber of the now vanquished Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

He served as the prime minister from October 31, 1984 to December 2, 1989.


Rajiv Gandhi remained Congress President until the elections in 1991. While campaigning for the elections, he was assassinated by a suicide bomber from the LTTE. His widow Sonia became the president of Congress party in 1998, and led the party to victory in the 2004 and 2009 parliament elections.

His son Rahul is a Member of Parliament and Vice President of the Congress. In 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, by the government of India.
