New Delhi : The vice president of Congress Rahul Gandhi on Thursday returned from his 56-day sabbatical, it had raised a lot of questions over his leadership of the party at a time when Congress has been battered in elections repeatedly.

Rahul arrived here at 11:15 am on a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok. He then proceeded to his residence at 12, Tughlaq Lane in central Delhi, which was scheduled to land at 10.35 AM, was delayed by 40 minutes, sources said.

The Congress Vice President wearing a dark shirt and seated in the back seat of his vehicle, he arrived escorted by his security personnel and drove straight into the house without interacting with the waiting mediapersons.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were at Rahul's residence to receive him. She has reached the 12, Tughlaq Road residence of Rahul before 11 AM and was soon followed by daughter Priyanka which the party has officially denied.

While the flight came from Bangkok, but reports claimed that he had only transited through the Thai capital and was either in Vietnam or Yangon in Myanmar. As the news of his return spread, tens of Congress workers converged outside his residence and celebrated the event by bursting crackers.

Rahul’s leave had come amid talk of an AICC session, where he was expected to be elevated as Congress President. During his absence, several party leaders came out in the open pitching for Sonia Gandhi to continue as president and raised questions over his leadership.

Earlier reports had suggested that Rahul was in Europe, Bhutan, Uttarakhand among other places.
