rann of kutch, rann of kutch gujrat, kutch gujrat, Revealed: Rann of Kutch
Mumbai : The salt desert of the Rann of Kutch, in the Indian state of Gujarat is one of the world’s great wildernesses. Combined, the Greater Rann and the Little Rann encompass about 23,000 square kilometres.  Fifty cities the size of Mumbai could fit into this vast salt desert.

Using different filming methods that include aerial footage shot on 4K High Definition, underground cameras, long exposure night photography and specialized slow motion. The scope of the film is enormous. It captures the awe inspiring beauty, complexity and the paradox that is the Rann of Kutch – a deserted wasteland and yet the cradle of life and civilization.

The word ‘Rann’ is derived from ‘Viraan, meaning deserted wasteland. While on the face of it, the Rann does seem to be deserted, there is much more to it than meets the eye. The Rann and the areas around it support a staggering diversity of life and cultures.

The film opens with a glimpse into how difficult life in the wild is in this region. We see how the Indian Wild Ass copes with temperatures that can rise to almost 50 degrees Celsius. Also featured are some rarely filmed and curious creatures of the Rann, like the subterranean dwellers, the Desert Jird (a relative of the Gerbil) and the elusive Desert Fox.

It’s a riot of colour and festivity, featuring religious processions, feasts, folk dancing and a horse racing contest where tough riders ride their steeds bareback, across the mud flats of the Rann of Kutch.
